Iran exports 56 tons saffron to 37 countries

Iran has exported some 56 tons of saffron to 37 countries in the past seven months, said director general of Industry, Mines and Trade Ministry's Office for Economic Affairs and Commercial Policies.

Mohammad Reza Kalami-Bejestani told the First National Festival of Saffron Development and Trade on Tuesday that 90 percent of the figure has been exported to Saudi Arabia, UAE, China, Spain and Afghanistan.
Noting that only the five states are familiar with the Iranian saffron, he added, 'This means that we have a lot to do to introduce the Iranian product.'
Interesting to say that the five states, Spain and UAE in particular, are exporting the Iranian saffron under its brand, he said, noting that the other problem with saffron's export is its export in bulk.
Of 56.525 tons of exported saffron in the past seven months, 3.235 tons have been exported in packages weighing less than 10 grams, 28.308 tons in packages of 10 to 30 grams and 24.978 tons equaling to half of the total exports in packages over 30 grams, he said.
Meanwhile, head of Khorasan Razavi Industry, Mines and Trade Organization Razieh Alirezaei said that one of the main problems with saffron export is that Iranian producers and exporters do not know the final consumers.
The province exported 160 tons of saffron last year, with most of it in bulk, she said.
Today, saffron's application is not limited to food stuff; rather it is used in pharmaceuticals, she noted.
Of 70,000 hectares of lands under saffron cultivation in the province, 8,000 hectares or 12 percent, belong to Torbat-e Heydarieh, located 150 kilometers southwest of Mashhad.
Some 117,000 families are engaged in saffron production across the province, Alirezaei said.
